The song that plays on repeat (P.I.M.P. by 50 Cent on steel drums) was absolutely jarring in the theater and would be difficult to replicate at home, in my opinion. Great movie, though - can’t wait to watch it again. Keep up the outstanding work, Daisuke! My favorite channel on youtube by far.

Thanks for the informative comments. I think Floating Weeds is very underrated but it is so different from the other late color films by Ozu,in that it is set far from Tokyo and tbe usual plot of a father trying to marry off his daughter is entirely absent. There is no part for Setsuko Hara and Chishu Ryu has only a minor role. There is,for Ozu,some quite strong language and two scenes of violent behavior towards women which is quite unusual. But Ganjiro Nakamura is excellent in the lead role,as he would be in The End of Summer the following year. And I agree that the cinematography is stunning,in particular the use of reds. cenes of violent behavior towards women which is certainly u usual. But Ganjiro Nakamura is excellent in the lead role,as he would be in The End of Summer the fo..owi g yea r

Hello Daisuke! Great review as always. I’m always struck by your depth of insight into these films, you are able to make me realize things I hadn’t thought of in the days and weeks after my first viewing of this film. I would say the biggest thing that stuck in my mind after seeing this movie was the quote from David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” when Fred tell the detectives “I like to remember things my own way. How I remembered them, not necessarily the way they happened.” I think this can be applied when thinking of the nature of truth and memory within the context of this film, especially with regards to how Sandra perceives her relationship dynamics with Vincent. This also relates to your ideas of perception and how we perceive an event and the potential break between reality and what we think happened (although this begs the question of what “reality” truly is and whether there exists a reality outside of our own perception). Thanks for the video as always and take care Daisuke!

Sophisticated discussions of Ozu are always appreciated; thank you. Believe it or not, I actually like A Story of Floating Weeds more than the 1959 color re-make. I think it has mostly to do with what I perceive as better pacing, which the comparative run times may reflect. However, what could have made this particular video even better would be if the entire discussion was done with only Japanese title cards, along with English subtitles. But, maybe that's too time-consuming.

Daisuke-san, I know you are a very polite and respectful person so I am sure this is not intentional, however nowadays the term "prostitute" is considered derogatory in English. There are several alternative terms which are preferable such as sexworker or escort. Again this is a relatively recent development and certainly at the time of release of this film the p-word would still have been considered acceptable. Love your content, especially your in-depth reviews and monthly Criterion announcement reactions videos. Thanks for all the hard work you put into the community.

Thank you. I don’t mean to offend so thank you for this comment. I understand that the term is one that is used in current statutes as well (as a term that is defined by laws, which to me is a reliable arbiter as to whether a word is appropriate or not). Of course I understand that usage of terms can change over time which is very understandable. But I don’t consider it a word in the way that you have mentioned and I think my usage it here is still within the bounds of acceptability in context. And my comments are made in the context of this film and not made in a way that is reflective of my own views of sex work as a personal or political or socially cultural topic. But all the same, if you are offended by it, please know that it is not at all intentional on my part. And I think you have a broader and more accepting perspective on language than I do so thank you for your comment which I know you made with the best of intentions. Thank you again and warmest regards.

Great video! We adore Floating Weeds so much. We are looking forward to going back to A Story of Floating Weeds. After watching Tokyo-Ga by Wim Wenders, I have wondered if Yasujirō Ozu sharing parts of himself with the character Komajuro, the great master who gathered with his troupe to drink and socialize ...in the same way Ozu famously did with his crew... We watched these movies in rapid succession and those parallels stuck with me. Great work as always, my partner and I love your analyses. 💜

Hey, Daisuke, are there any other anime shows that you've seen and enjoyed? I'm personally not expansively knowledged within the medium but I've always really liked Cowboy Bebop, Gunbuster, and FLCL, and more recently, I've had a kick for Gurren Lagann, Jujutsu Kaisen, and One Piece. I've yet to watch more popular and acclaimed anime lately like Attack on Titan, Berserk, and Code Geass. I assume you have not seen a lot but I think it's a question worth asking.

Daisuke! Thank you as always for taking the time to discuss the releases from Criterion. This was another much appreciated conversation by you that further elevated my own experience with a film. I watched this film for the first time last night on my newly purchased Criterion blu-ray and was thoroughly absorbed by it. Somehow, when I first learned of this release through Criterion as well as your channel, I just knew it was going to be a title that I would love. I essentially went into this completely blind but with a few ideas of what it might be about based on the synopsis and some of your comments. My expectations were blown away as this documentary progressed and showed these amazing photographs by a master artist I previously had no knowledge of who shared her personal story/quest to expose more information regarding Oxycontin, social stigmas, the Sackler family etc. etc. Seeing someone with such obvious artistic integrity risking her career essentially to expose these people who were profiting big-time off of the drug Oxycontin whilst shielding themselves from scrutiny with philanthropy/artistic donations was epic. Not only that aspect of the story but the many implications that could come to mind regarding the art world and money laundering/social hypocrisies etc. when speaking about the Sackler family for example. What I was most taken with was Nan Goldin and how she shared her life story. The images and the stories she shares with us were amazing and quite sad at the same time. When she spoke about her childhood with images of the outside of her childhood home were quite chilling and raised many emotions inside me including many things that I have personal thoughts regarding. It was also just so thought provoking to hear more about decades past in America when the AIDS crisis was front and center and affecting so many beautiful people who were being marginalized by a disease. So many more implications come to mind as I watched this documentary and thought of these things in a retrospect of sorts. The film *The Dallas Buyers Club* was coming to my mind as I watched this film as well as the television series *Euphoria* . It was so wonderful to see the empathy and care given to the human beings on display in this film. This documentary made the one film from John Waters I have seen *Pink Flamingos* that much better and has given me many more opportunities for thoughts regarding some of the players in John Waters works as well as John Waters works themselves now that I have a closer look at some of the scenes Nan Goldin lived amongst. The other thing I truly loved about this documentary was the way it was intimately tied to art in a variety of ways like photography, museums themselves, protests that utilize artistic expression, and in ways that I'm not even articulate enough to explain, this film is so smart with how it chooses to show what makes it so great to me. I wished I could explain even more of what all I loved about this documentary but needless to say this was an excellent start to another Criterion journey I am currently on thanks to the July 2024 Barnes and Noble sale that you were so kind to inform me on! This documentary was well worth the wait to pick up for 50% off! So many happy feelings as always when I get to experience a fresh work of art that gives me so much food for thought. To get to share some thoughts as well as hear your thoughts is extra icing on the cake for the overall experience. You are the man, Daisuke! Cheers!

Going to get 4k of this at the sale. Don't have a 4k player yet but one of my all time favorite films that I have and collected on many formats.

I am planning to buy some Criterion Collection this month. I may get some movies from Pasolini.

I found an older DVD release of the film at an second hand store years, really cool find. Also I wish Criterion would release more movie adaptions with the original novel they're based on. I think the only other release they did of that was The Man Who Fell to Earth.

I still remember the discussion that was had on a livestream about this film. That was quite fun. I’m glad you’re discussing the new 4K version of the film Daisuke, I hope you’re doing well. Have a great night and take care!

Daisuke san, I really enjoyed your overall synopsis and review of TP seasons 1&2. But I have to say I am most looking forward to your thoughts on season 3/the limited event series even more so because it is one hell of a puzzle and curiosity!!

That looks like a great store! Friday morning I visited my local B&N and picked up the following titles: After Hours, Anatomy of a Fall, Mr. Klein, Peeping Tom and The Servant.

Thanks for the video, Daisuke. In this B&N sale, I picked up the following titles in 4KUHD-Blu Ray format: (1) Risky Business, (2) Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, (3) Peeping Tom, (4) The Long Good Friday, (5) Don't Look Now, (6) The Roaring Twenties and (7) One False Move. #2, 4 and 7 are blind buys. I was also eyeing the new Eric Rohmer box set but heard there are some technical problems with some of the discs (authoring issues, color blocking etc.). So, currently on the fence for that one.

Cool Daisuke that Barnes and Noble approached you to announce the Criterion sale! I got a few online for the sale and for a friend of mine as well! Hope you and your family are well!

Very weird because I have been to that Barnes and Noble a million times. And I went to middle school around the block and Highschool down the street.

Daisuke used to have to live vicariously through us while we got to go to Barnes and Noble for the Criterion sale. This is exciting that he gets to participate in the sale. 👍
